Durham Ox Newark Road Wellow Notts. How the Durham Ox got it's name. This former coaching inn takes it's name from a famous beast bred by Charles Collings of  Ketton, near Darlington, a man who vastly improved the breed of Durham Shorthorns. In  1795 his famous bull 'Hubback' had a grandson, a roan calf which grew into the celebrated  Durham Ox.  This ox by the time it was six years old, weighed 3024 pounds, was something to marvel at. It  was soon sold for the hefty sum of £250 and its new owner was offered over ten times this  amount for his newly acquired animal, but refused.  Between 1801 and 1810 he recouped his investment by touring the country with the beast,  conveying it in a specially built vehicle. During a visit to London the exhibition took as much  as £100 in one day.  The great impression made by this animal is apparent from the many pubs that have been  named after it, especially those to be found in places visited by the tour.  Webmaster
